Kokoro no Komotta Aisatsu

A few more flips back to what would be the end of an English book was the beginning of this one, as it is meant to be read right to left. The beginning had and entire page devoted to our protagonist standing outside an impressive looking school, and lots of lettering above and underneath, which seemed to be the intro to the story. Continuing on, he is locked inside with fourteen others by the bear, and they were all given a shocking story by it, leaving all of the characters looking on edge.
"Are you enjoying it so far?" Jay asked.

Preslea nodded with a grin on her face. "Yeah! It's pretty cool!"

"Spectacular."
Farther in and it shows one of the girls, dead, with a knife protruding from her chest. This leaves or protagonist crestfallen; she appears to have been the his love interest for the past chapter. Him and the sidekick don't seem to be good friends yet, so she treats him with the cold shoulder in the investigation.

Preslea put the book down and sighed. Am I getting sucked in? No...She couldn't have. She looked at it for a moment and picked it back up, glancing over the pictures again.

Fay and Jay chuckled. Same pitch, same time, same quiet volume.
Preslea lost her spot when she had set the book down, so when she had opened it back up she was at the end of the two-part chapter, where all the characters were standing in a circle in a court-style room. They all seemed to be going over the evidence of the murder, almost constantly interrupted by a panel in the middle with the bear's two cents.

Preslea looked up and gave them a confused glance. What's with the bear?  They're trying to talk! She had her face basically in it, going over every little stroke. "UGGGGGGH." She flopped over. "How could I become so invested in something I just started?" She questioned.

Because the bear is a douche, Preslea. Because the bear is a douche.
"Haha. It's easy to suck yourself into these things." Jay smiled. Fay leaned back and whispered in his ear, and they both chuckled. They continued to go with more pictures and words, until the culprit was found out--the boy who played baseball against his will and dressed like a punk rocker. His surprised, distraught expressions was priceless. The next page was entirely black, with white lettering, and English underneath it. It read, "One Million Fungoes."

Preslea closed the book and looked up at them. "What are you talking about?" She asked softly and bit her lip.

"Hmm?" They glance up from their whispering, tilting their heads the opposite way of the other in unison. 
"Oh," Fay said. 
"Nothing," Jay said.

"Um..Okay." She picked up the manga once again and picked off where she left off.

They continued their whispers and giggled together at points. 
Anyway, back to our story after we were rudely interrupted. "One Million Fungoes", it said. Wonder what that means. Turning the page, she'd find the punk boy standing at his spot in the trial circle, looking incredibly worried. The text at the top and bottom was in English, the top reading, "GAME OVER", and the bottom reading, "KUWATA LEON, FOR MURDERING SAYAKA MAIZONA YOU WILL BE PUNISHED WITH EXECUTION."

Preslea laid on her back, looking up at the book. Luckily, she had a lot of hair so it was a pillow for her fragile head. "You know, whispering is rude." She said not looking at them.

They paused.
"It is?" they asked at once. "We apologize," they continued. "We will stop." And so they sat silently, looking up at the sky together.
The next page had Leon, which was his apparent name, being caught by the neck with a chain. He was dragged back down a hallway, obviously choking, and when he got to his destination--an indoor batting cage--he was tied up to a post in a center by the chain. A turret popped up out of the ground, along with the teddy bear with a bat and baseball cap on his head. The bear pressed a button on the top of the machine, and it started shooting baseballs at Leon's body quickly, smothering him with them. He spun around the post violently as it happened, and the bear hit any rebound balls back at him with his bat. Each ball that wasn't rebounded back rolled across the floor in a dramatic angle of looking at the action from the floor, covered with blood.

Preslea nodded and sighed softly. Oh no..Who dun it? Well,she HAD to find out! She rolled over on her stomach and was reading closely.

At the end, all people looked absolutely shocked, staring from outside the cage. Well, almost everyone. The girl who is burned at the stake later in the book looks on calmly, as well as the later sidekick and a boy with a large poof in his hair like he was from the 50's. The bear laughed, and laughed, and the chapter ended.

Preslea blinked and then frowned. "I think I'm done. This has messed me up a bit." She muttered and handed Jay the manga. "It was good, but pretty confusing."

"It'd be less so if you could read the kanji." He chuckled, smiling at her and taking it from her hands.

"Kanji?' She said confused and sat up. Her hair was messy and her bangs kinda fell in her face. "I mean, it was good..Just not my cup of tea."

"Japanese kanji. It's the symbols you usually connect to the Japanese language," he explained. "That's alright."

"Oh..I see!" She smiled and nodded. "I'm sorry. Maybe I'll have to introduce you to something new!"
