Bio: For the most part, Mal's had a pretty easy life. Sure, his father always had high expectations for him that, no matter how high he reached, he never could quite measure up to them, and yeah, his father would all too often make promises that he had no intention of keeping, leaving Mal let down more often than not. But Mal sees no reason to complain. After all, it can always be worse, right? Mal is the youngest of three kids by a good ten years. As a result, his two older sisters were never really around.
He was also the only one out of his family to have any magical abilities. He was a freak in his family, the black sheep, though no one said it directly. He knew, as soon as the flowers started growing around him based off of his emotions -- yes, flowers. He finds it embarrassing, don't laugh at him -- that he would never quite fit in, and sure enough, as soon as the option to send him to this school came around, they sent him away.

Name: Nessa Blanchard
Magic: None. She's a Cerubat (a bat-like creature that can emit a high pitched scream that kills anyone within earshot by exploding their ear drums, eyeballs, and internal organs. Also has sharp claws and teeth though they prefer using their scream over hand-to-hand combat).
Bio: Her mother, Dana Miller, was from a wealthy family very concerned with reputation. Her father, Keith Blanchard, was a criminal whose crimes ranged from petty theft to murder. Dana was nineteen, Keith was twenty-eight. They fell in love, and Dana got pregnant. They could have been a happy family, the two of them and their little girl, but fate had other plans and Keith neglected to inform Dana of his "career" choice, and when she found out, she panicked. Still pregnant with their daughter, Dana fled and didn't return until a week after their daughter was born. She named the little girl Nessa Leigh-Anne Miller, the first and middle names variations of her close friends who stood by her during her pregnancy. She left the little girl, only a week old, on Keith's porch, and was never seen again.
Nessa was raised by her father, a wizard who specialized in air magic, but never could get the hang of magic, and as a child she was very much a loner, though she did find friendship in a boy three years old than her named Ian. Her father worked with his parents and Nessa and Ian soon developed a brother-sister relationship. She was also very close with her father, and he kept her very sheltered, keeping his job as secret from her as possible.
When she was twelve, that all caught up to them. She arrived home one day to find two strange men in her living room. One was pointing a gun at Keith, the other seeming to interrogate him. She learned later that they were a vigilante group hell bent on finding the leader of their little crime empire that Keith was a part of. But Keith would not speak and when they began to use poor Nessa, who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, for leverage, he became too sure in his ability to save her, and he lunged forward. This action resulted in a bullet in his chest. He was dead before he hit the ground.
Determined to still find out what they needed to know, the men abducted Nessa and for months, tortured her in hopes that she would break. The problem was that she knew nothing, but even after they learned this they kept her there, until she broke completely.
She'd been there for four months, though it felt like a year, when she transformed for the first time. She managed to cut the ropes using her claws (and cut her hands to nearly ribbons) and screamed. She kept screaming until she was free of the place -- killing everyone in her path and almost herself. After that, she stayed with Ian's family for a few days before she was forced to move in with her grandparents.

Personality: Detached, intelligent, secretive, cold, flirty, controlling, manipulative, egotistical.
Other fun facts: Because Nessa inherited her abilities from her mother, and Cerubats are few and far between, she knows very little about her own abilities.
When she first moved in with her grandparents, they encouraged her to keep a 'feelings journal' where she was to write down how the past events made her feel. Instead, she wrote down everything that happened in excruciating detail. She still has the journal, tucked beneath her mattress where she hopes no one will ever find it.
As a child she wanted to be an actress in movies, and though she still carries that dream around in the back of her mind, she knows it can never be for fear of her past being dug up.
She has issues with trust and has a habit of pushing people away.
She was born with the name Nessa Miller, and they kept it for the longest time. When she was five and expressed annoyance with her and her father having different last names, they changed it to Blanchard.
As a child, her father (bitter over the disappearance of her mother) would often speak badly about woman in front of her. As a result, she's always been more hostile towards other females as opposed to males.
